Cuisine Lab will officially open its restaurant on 2 June in the presence of special guests Alfonso Gomez, upcoming Mayor of Geneva and Filippo Grandi, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

“We want to celebrate our wonderful journey and tireless supporters,” says Sarah Hoibak, Co-founder of Cuisine Lab. “But first and foremost, it is a moment to recognize all the asylum seekers and refugees involved in the running of this organization – the reason why we exist in the first place and a true inspiration for all of us.”

During a two-hour event, guests will have the opportunity to taste exquisite food, engage with the chefs and Cuisine Lab team, and participate in a live solidarity raffle draw with many exciting prizes. Invitees include representatives of Swiss institutions, embassies, the United Nations, Non-Profit Organizations, philanthropic foundations and the private sector.

“We also want to leverage this occasion to raise more awareness about our mission and rally support towards our social programme,” says Hoibak. “Given our dual identity as both a commercial and non-profit organization, we need donations to fully implement our programme and help refugees achieve economic independence and social integration.”

Established in 2016 as a voluntary association, Cuisine Lab is now a social enterprise restaurant training and employing refugees, and promoting diversity and inclusion through the unifying power of social gastronomy. The ultimate goal of the organization is refugee integration through professional training in the culinary field, placement in French language courses, and meaningful employment opportunities.

Currently, 11 asylum seekers, refugees and former refugees contribute to Cuisine Lab’s operations as chefs, kitchen staff, front of house, catering team, members of the management team and oversight committee.

Over the past seven years, the organization received public and private donations, including Ernst Göhner Stiftung, Fondation Meyrinoise du Casino, Fonds KADO de la Fondation Philanthropia Lombard Odier, Fondation Terra & Casa, Loterie Romande, Services Industriels de Genève, Fondation Philanthropique Famille Sandoz and Ville de Genève.
